The councillor in charge of the borough’s children has resigned after being arrested on suspicion of having indecent images of children.
Councillor Brian Gate, cabinet member for children, schools and families, was arrested at his Harrow home on September 24 by detectives from the Metropolitan Police and has been bailed until early November pending further enquiries, the Harrow Times can reveal.
Harrow Council will formally announce his resignation at tomorrow night’s cabinet meeting, but councillors and senior headteachers from across the borough have already been informed of his arrest.
Cllr Gate, who is married to Harrow on the Hill councillor Ann Gate, has been in his post as portfolio holder for children since May, but has been responsible for schools and families since Labour took control of the council after the 2010 General Election.
In a statement, the Met said: “We can confirm that a 57-year-old man was arrested on September 24 at a residential address in the Harrow area on suspicion of the possession of indecent images of children.

Be careful about Cllr Ann Gate; she's a hard-working nurse, NOT a career politician, and won't be the first person to discover they'd married an alleged idiot. (To date he hasn't actually been charged).
He's not just a councillor - he's big in the local church (or was until last week). Jesus might forgive him but the congregation is another matter.

Well the god squad are fighting for the Gate couple. Ann Gate should resign just because she's a Labour Councillor? Well you may have a point.
But it's her husband that's on the boards of various schools and holds the portfolio related to children.
The defence that "everyone's done something (wrong)" and therefore a bit of kiddie porn here and there doesn't matter if he's heard to say "it's a fair cop" when busted suggests a problem with moral equivalence.
She's on Harrow Council's Education Sub-Committee and is therefore involved with schools.
She might not want to to be on that now.

Cllr Ann Gate is also involved with a 'Christian Youth Charity' called Roxeth Youth Zone in Harrow. This is getting very Labour25ish and she should resign from politics and 'charity work' immediately.
I agree with the last comment she should resign or be suspended whilst investigations are pending.
Why should she resign from anything, judged purely by her husband's actions? How can anyone call her a "bint" when they a) don't know anything about her and b) have presumably realised that, upon seizure of their personal computers and her husband's admission of guilt, she has not been arrested also? It is also of note that he has not yet been charged with any offence, as noted above. Personal attacks, labels and prejudices are not helpful in these situations. He has handed himself in and will face the necessary consequences. I imagine that his wife feels utterly betrayed and traumatised by the whole event. Her life will have been made unbearably stressful enough as it is without giving up valuable, community based volunteering roles that will enable her to stay in touch with reality and preoccupy her by doing something worthwhile, rather than sitting at home on her own feeling distraught.
There's no reason to think she has done anything wrong but, with little or no control over how people's personal information is stored by councillors, would anyone be happy to share their personal info. with Ann? A breach of trust by Brian reaches further than the specific incident/s. Did he hand himself in? Like Andrew Mitchell, there sometimes comes a point where you can;t do your job any more even if you have atoned for your mistakes or done nothing wrong and you just have to quit. Cllrs are there for the people, not the other way around..
Ann Gate is still on the Education Sub Committee.It doesn't look right. She should stand down from that for a start.Am I being cynical or will she just hang in there to claim expenses?
And Brian is on the Advisory Council for Religious Education!

Labour have chutzpah.Those two are milking Harrow Ccuncil along with David Gawn who gets banged up on the 20th.
